Avery Point EcoHusky Club
Purpose
This club is open to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff. It is an environmentally oriented club whose goal is to improve sustainability on the Avery Point campus and its surroundings and to disseminate information and educate the campus community on environmental issues.

Meetings
      Bimonthly: day of the week is determined at the first meeting of the year to accommodate most members’ schedule.
Officers are elected yearly at the beginning of the fall semester
First meeting: Thursday September 10th at 12:15 in ACD 201

Examples of potential EcoHusky projects identified by members
Energy conservation on campus

  • Increase number of motion sensors for light switches
  • Educate community about turning off lights and instruments when not in use
  • Preventive maintenance of air conditioning units and fridges/freezers
  • Establishing a replacing age to maximize fridges/freezers energy efficiency
  • Investigate alternative fuel energy such as wind, solar, and biofuels
    • Working with the Environmental Advisory Committee to promote a wind turbine as a pilot project with educational value

Grounds maintenance

    • Increase number and visibility of recycling centers
    • Create no-mowing areas
    • Plant native plants or wildflowers
    • Choose only native plants for new planting
    • Reduce/eliminate application of pesticides and fertilizers
    • Improve wildlife habitat around pond
    • Allow riparian zone to re-establish
    • Install osprey platform
    • Create a wildlife viewing zone

Recycling

    • Increase number and visibility of recycling centers

Outreach projects

  • increase awareness of home hazardous waste management
  • investigate sustainable energy solutions for low-income Groton/New London residents
